Directions for the test---The final oral test is designed to assess your spoken English in different types of situations and on a wide variety of topics. It consists of three parts, each involving a particular speech activity. Generally, the more you speak, the better your score should be. So do not simply think that by saying less, you can avoid mistakes and therefore receive a higher score. The test will run on at regular class hours spanning the 16th, 17th or even 18th weeks of our university curriculum schedule.

Part 1-----You are required to introduce yourself and answer general questions about your home/family, your job/studies, your interests and a wide range of similar familiar topic areas. This part lasts between two and three minutes.

Part 2---You are given a task card with prompts and are asked to talk on a particular topic. You have one minute to prepare and you can make some notes if you wish, before speaking for between one and two minutes. The teacher may ask further questions on the same topic.

Part 3---Individual presentation based on a passage you've just read--You will be allowed 8 minutes to prepare for this task. The individual presentation is not a formal speech and therefore you should try to talk in an informal way. The passage will be either chosen from your textbook or from some other sources. The purpose of having the reading passage is to give you something to speak about. You may take notes while reading the passage but you are not allowed to take the passage with you when having the oral test. You can just imagine that the examiner has not read the passage and you are telling him what it is about. If you miss a point in the passage or make a factual error, you will not lose marks. If you wish, you can add your own opinions or ideas. Of course, your presentation must be relevant to the topic of your passage. Your presentation is limited to 2 minutes.

The following is a model set for your reference to Part 3

Kidnapped teachers in the Philippines

Religious extremists in the Philippines have recently kidnapped at least 28 teachers in a series of incidents which took place about 800 kilometers south of Manila. All the teachers were either rescued by the army or were released when their families paid money to the kidnappers. However, teachers remain in fear of similar incidents and they are worried that before long a kidnapped teacher may be killed.

Education officials in the Philippines have stated that they may have to close all schools because of the risk of further kidnappings. Classes at three schools have already been suspended because about 200 teachers are refusing to go to work. The teachers have complained that the local government and the army are not doing enough to maintain law and order in the region. They are not willing to work unless the government can guarantee their safety.

It is not clear why the group of religious extremists is choosing teachers as a target for its terrorist activities. Some experts believe that the lack of security in the schools makes the teachers particularly vulnerable. Others point out that the kidnapping of teachers is only part of a wider campaign of violence, which includes bombings and murders across the whole of the southern Philippines.

If all schools in the region do have to be closed, it would affect the education of thousands of children. Although education officials want schools to run normally, they understand the teacher’s fears. The regional education director pointed out that there was little he could do if teachers refused to work. He is urging the government to send more soldiers to the area to protect the teachers. It is hoped that this will enable schools to return to normal in the near future.
