Principles of Oral English Course Outline for Post Graduate Program Spring, 2017

Teaching and Learning Methodologies:

·         *Each class will create a wechat group to facilitate the distribution of class notes and for consistency of collaboration with peers and Instructor.

·         Classes will be divided into work groups or teams with an assigned Team leader.  The role of the Team Leader will also serve as an Instructional Assistant during Class. TBD

Teaching and Learning Philosophy

 As your assigned instructor, my aim is not to use “ the chalk and talk approach to teaching.”  We are partners in your learning.  Meaning, my ‘talk time’ will be 40% and as students, your designated talk time to guide subject matter class discussions, lectures and presentations during class will be 60%.

 *Class Materials will be provided

 Grading Policy

 Class Attendance: 40%

Participation and Class Projects: 40%

Final Project: 20%

 Targeted Learning Objectives:

 1.    Students will be able to use information and ideas from other subject areas and personal experiences to form and express opinions and judgments.

2.    Students will be able to document personal reactions about experiences, events, and observations, using a form of social communication such as videos, photographs or voice recordings.

3.    Students will be able to speak in response to listening to and viewing a variety of performances from peers.

  1. Students will be able to sse audible voice and pacing appropriate to content and audience when presenting original works, such as stories, poems, and plays, to adults and peers, etc

The following outline serves as a weekly template for the course over the next eighteen weeks.

 Week 1    

·         Overview of Class Expectations and Organization

·         Team Assignments

·         Getting to Know You

·         Grammar Spotlight: Past Tense; Used

·         Class Activity-Finding Out About a Classmate’s Childhood

Week 2 Objective: Listening for Directions

·         Focus on asking for and giving Information

·         Subject Emphasis: Transportation

·         Grammar Spotlight: Adverbs of quantity; too much, too many, more, less, fewer

·         Skill Development: Intonation with “Wh” questions- What, Where, Who

·         Activity-Blindfold exercise

Week 3 Objective: Making Comparisons, Making Positive and Negative Changes -Focus on talking about lifestyle changes and expressing wishes

·         Subject Emphasis on making evaluations and comparisons

·         Grammar Spotlight: Using nouns (not enough, as many) and sentence stress

·         Skill Development- Pronunciation through Poetry Reading

Week 4

Objective: Expressing Likes and Dislike

Focus on describing a favorite snack and giving instructions

·         Subject Emphasiswill be on descriptions of foods

·         Grammar Spotlight on reduced forms of did you and have you

·         Skill Development -Listening

·         Activity writing a recipe to improve mental and physical performance

Week 5 Objective Describing Vacation Plans, Going Places

Focus on going places, travel and vacation

·         Subject Emphasis on giving travel advice

·         Grammar Spotlight on future tense of be going to, will, have to, must, need to, ought to

·         Skill Development on getting more for less through on saving for travel

·         Activity ; Developing a monthly budget to plan a future vacation

Week 6 Objective: Making Requests, Complaints and Giving Excus

Focus on listening to complaints, excuses and apologies

·         Subject Emphasis –Two part verb stress

·         Grammar Spotlight- Will and Would you mind?

·         Activity –Listening to a complaint and achieving a resolution

·         Session Two Writing

Week 7 Objective: Describing Technology Uses, What is this used for?

(Focus on giving instructions

·         Subject Emphasis on describing technology

·         Grammar Spotlight on infinitive complements

·         Skill Development –syllable stress

·         Activity-describing a useful item that can have more than one purpose/usage

Week 8 Objective: Celebrations , Festivals and Special Events (Mid Term Project)

·         Focus -Unusual Customs

·         Subject Emphasis on Holidays or Festivals

·         Grammar Spotlight on clauses such as before, after, when…

·         Skill Development on stress and rhythm

·         Activity –Demonstrating an Unusual Holiday or Custom

Week 9 Objective: Back to the Future, Talking About Change, Describing Time ,Focus on Life in the past, present and future

·         Subject Emphasis comparing time periods

·         Grammar Spotlighton conditional sentences with if clauses

·         Skill Development –Using Pitch

·         Activity on Describing types of love

·         Session Two Writing – Are you in Love?

Week 10 Objective: Job Preferences, Learning about abilities and describing possibilities-Focus on describing personality traits and job preferences  Subject Emphasis on listening to people talk about their interests

·         Grammar Spotlight –Final T- in don’t, won’t, not, cant

·         Skill Development -listening

·         Activity on how to find a job that is right for you

 Week 11 Objective: Discussing Facts and Learning about Monuments, Landmarks through Visual Images (Pearl River walking tour and video journal)

·         Focus on countries

·         Subject Emphasis on describing facts

·         Grammar Spotlight on passive tense of by

·         Skill Development- Listening for information about a country

·         Activity – learning about classmate’s travel habits/preferences

Week 12 Objective: Describing Recent Experiences, Remembering someone in the past-Focus on describing recent experiences (

Subject Emphasis on writing biographies

·         Grammar Spotlight Past continuous versus simple past

·         Skill Development –constrastive/syllable  stress

·         Activity- The game of life- Who is a child prodigy?

·         Session Two Writing

Week 13 Objective: Asking for and giving reactions to movies and books(TBD) ( Writing a Movie Review (in class film)

·         Focus on giving reactions

·         Subject Emphasis on entertainment

·         Grammar Spotlight on word and sentence stress

·         Skill Development listening for opinions

·         Activity-How to write a movie review

·         Session Two Writing

Week 14 Objective: Non Verbal Communication- Interpreting Body Language and Gestures

·         Subject Emphasis on listening to interpret meanings

Week 15 Objective: Giving Advice and Making Suggestions-TBD

Week 16 Objective: Making Excuses, Accepting Invitations-Focus on reporting on what people say/ TBD
